Susan Gelman, M.D., M.P.H. is a board-certified ophthalmologist, fellowship trained in vitreoretinal diseases. Dr. Gelman uses the latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to treat conditions of the retina, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears and localized detachment, retinal vein occlusions, and hereditary retinal dystrophies.

After completing her B.S. degree from Monmouth University, NJ, summa cum laude and with honors, Dr. Gelman went on to obtain her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. There she was awarded the Alfred Steiner Award for Best Medical Student Research, as well as the Edith and Denton McKane Graduation Award for excellence in ophthalmology research. During her medical school studies, she also obtained her master’s degree in Public Health from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

After an internship in internal medicine at Columbia University’s St. Luke’s/Roosevelt hospital, Dr. Gelman completed her ophthalmology residency training at New York University and Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital. She went on to do her fellowship in medical retina and ophthalmic genetics at Jules Stein Eye Institute of the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Gelman is currently a clinical instructor at New York University, and she is on staff at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and Northwell’s Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital. She is a member and fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists, and a member of the New York State Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Gelman has published many peer-reviewed manuscripts on retinal disease and has presented her findings at several national ophthalmology meetings. She has also participated in numerous multicenter clinical trials. She serves as a reviewer for RETINA, the Journal of Retina and Vitreous Diseases.

Dr. Gelman joins Ramapo Ophthalmology Associates after having practiced in Los Angeles and then Manhattan for several years. She understands the importance of listening to her patients and makes it a priority to help those she treats feel at ease. In her free time, Dr. Gelman enjoys taking hikes with her husband and three children. She also enjoys swimming, kayaking, and all things outdoors.
