As we age it can become more difficult to read print and see objects at a close distance without the use of glasses. Weakened near vision can make it difficult to complete everyday and regular tasks such as using a computer, texting, or reading a menu at a restaurant. Fortunately, with the great advances in ophthalmology and the use of new technologies, our doctors offer KAMRA™ Inlays to help restore presbyopia at our Pomona, NY, office.
Patients in their 40s or 50s often lose flexibility and elasticity in their eye lens, which makes it difficult for refracted light to focus on the eye’s retina. When the natural lens in your eye stiffens, it also becomes more difficult to bring objects into focus, causing blurred vision when attempting to view objects at a close distance. This natural, age-related condition does not have any negative health risk, but the inability to focus on close objects can cause eyestrain, discomfort, headaches, and increased frustration.
Traditionally, one of the only ways to treat near vision was with eyeglasses and contact lenses. However, we now offer a long-lasting solution for patients who would like to achieve clearer vision without having to rely on traditional methods. Through a comprehensive eye procedure, we can treat your near vision with KAMRA™ Inlays.
The KAMRA™ Inlay is a specialized implant that is smaller and thinner than a contact lens, and is placed to rest along the layers of your cornea. The Inlay, made of a safe biocompatible material called polyvinylidene fluoride, has a small pinhole at the center that works similar to a camera’s aperture, allowing for an increased depth of focus by letting light properly enter the eye. As opposed to various treatments such as monovision LASIK and multifocal intraocular lens implants, these Inlays do not affect your distance vision. By placing the Inlays in a single eye, you can maintain the ability to see images at a distance, while also achieving clearer vision for near and intermediate work.
If you have become frustrated about having to hold objects at an arms length and are finding it increasingly more difficult to focus on books, your phone, and other close objects, let us help you treat your case of presbyopia.
As a result of the microscopic size, just 3.8mm in diameter and a 1.6mm opening, you will not be able feel the Inlay once it has been placed. Since it adheres directly to the corneal tissue, it will be secured firmly and will not shift out of place. Although factors such as the color of your eye and lighting conditions may occasionally make it visible to the naked eye, the Inlay is virtually invisible and rarely noticed by others.
